EN • For most people, attending a formal dinner isn’t a fun thing to do. I can totally understand that ! There are unseen dos and don’ts and social protocols you should follow. It all begins with your clothing, which, of course, must be proper, then there’s the table manners and various unspoken rules. In short, it can be a real challenge at the best of times, and with that in mind, I want to share a guide on how to survive a fancy formal dinner.

DE • Formale Abendessen gehörten zum Business Leben einfach dazu. Für die Meisten ist der Gedanke an ein formelles Abendessen, allerdings kein Auslöser ungebremster Freude. Das ist auch wirklich nachvollziehbar, es gibt eine klare Etiquette an die man sich halten sollte. Alles beginnt mit der Kleidung, die natürlich passend sein muss. Dann sind da natürlich noch die Tischmanieren und verschiedene andere unausgesprochene Regeln. Kurz gesagt, es kann eine echte Herausforderung sein! Natürlich kann man auch ein formales Abendessen gut meistern, wenn man ein paar kleine Regeln befolgt.

EN • The main reason people feel uncomfortable at a formal dinner is they are not sure what to expect. Therefore, you should inform yourself prior to the event. The Internet is always a mine of information, and it only takes a Google search to find what you’re looking for. The dos and don’ts can seem a little intimidating, but actually, once you know what is expected of you, you can relax and enjoy the event. It is always a good idea to put a few tissues in your pocket, and of course, there’s always the restroom if you need a little break.

DE • Ich denke die Meisten fühlen sich bei dem Gedanken an ein offizielles Abendessen unwohl, weil sie sich einfach nicht sicher sind, was auf sie zukommt. Es gilt viele Normen zu beachten. Dieses Problem kann man ganz einfach lösen. Viele Tipps darüber was man tun oder lassen sollte findet man ganz einfach im Internet.  Es ist immer eine gute Idee, ein paar Basics wie z.b Taschentücher dabei zu haben. Falls es mal zu anstrengend wird, ist eine kleine Pause an der frischen Luft auch immer eine gute Idee.

EN • Of course, the hosts expect a reply for the formal dinner invitation. The sooner you do that, the better the organisers can plan. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you are unsure about anything, so you already have an idea of what to expect. There’s no shame in not knowing something, and in order to avoid a mistake, be clear about what is expected of you.

DE • Natürlich erwarten die Gastgeber eine Antwort auf die Einladung. Je früher ihr sie wissen lasst, dass ihr kommen werdet, desto besser können sie das Event planen. Falls ihr noch Fragen wie z.B dem Dresscode habt, stellt diese Fragen gleich wenn ihr zusagt. Es ist keine Schande, etwas nicht zu wissen, und um einen Fehler zu vermeiden, frage ich lieber einmal öfter nach.

Observe Others

EN • Whenever you are unsure about anything, observe other guests and this will be a model for correct behaviour. There is a lot to take on board, and there are articles for some further reading on how to behave at a fancy formal dinner.

DE • Falls man sich während des Essens wegen irgend etwas nicht ganz sicher ist, hilft es immer einfach mal ein bisschen abzuwarten und andere zu beobachten. Hier findet ihr nochmal einen ausführlicheren Artikel zum Thema Etiquette – der bringt sicher auch schon ein wenig Licht ins Dunkel.

Switch Off Your Phone

EN • Of course it is super impolite to use your mobile phone while attending a formal event. Ok, except for blogger events! Still, I like to switch my phone to silent mode. That way I can make sure I can give other people my full attention.

DE • Ich finde es echt unhöflich, während einer offiziellen Veranstaltung das Handy zu benutzen. Ok, nehmen wir Blogger-Events mal davon aus. Trotzdem schalte ich mein Handy während des Essens auf jeden Fall auf stumm. So kann ich sicher gehen, dass mein Gegenüber meine volle Aufmerksamkeit hat.

Table Placements

EN • This is the thing that scares off most people. You find yourself confronted with so many utensils, yet the general rule is to work from the outside in. The bread plate will be on the left, while your drink is on the right, with two glasses – one for water, the other for wine.

DE • Dieser Punkt löst wohl bei Vielen Unbehagen aus. Wozu braucht man denn die vielen Teller und das ganze Besteck? Dafür gibt es eine ganz einfache Faustregel: Man arbeitet sich von außen nach innen. Der Brotteller befindet sich auf der linken Seite, das Getränk auf der rechten. Es sind meist zwei Gläser – eins für Wasser und eins für Wein.

EN • With a little research and the confidence that you are dressed properly, I’m sure the event will be a great experience. Remember, you are supposed to enjoy it.

DE • An all diese Regeln kann man sich aber schnell gewöhnen und wenn man dazu noch das Gefühl hat, gut angezogen zu sein, wird das Abendessen ganz sicher ein voller Erfolg.
