EN • Some would say that I traveled a lot in my life. I think it was not enough by a long shot. Somewhere in the middle lies probably the truth. However, combining my education with my travels gave me the much more time to explore the world. So here are some tips on how to develop your professional career while travelling.
DE • Einige würden sagen, dass ich in meinem Leben schon viel gereist bin. Ich finde, dass es noch lange nicht genug war. Irgendwo in der Mitte liegt vermutlich die Wahrheit. Eines ist jedoch sicher: Hätte ich meine schulische Karriere nicht mit dem Reisen verbunden, wäre ich nicht so viel herum gekommen bzw. hätte einige Länder nicht so intensiv kennen gelernt. Deshalb möchte ich euch heute ein paar Tipps geben wie ihr beides verbinden könnt.
Learn another language
EN • From my experience, language skills are more than just “a plus” on your CV. The more languages you speak the better. Of course it takes ages to learn another language. However, I feel that it goes much quicker if you’re actually in the country where it is spoken. So you can apply the new language in your daily life. This is a good way to develop your professional career.
DE • Meiner Erfahrung nach sind Fremdsprachen-kenntnisse mehr als nur “nice to have”. Für den Lebenslauf gilt: Je mehr Sprachen jemand spricht desto besser. Natürlich kostet es viel Zeit und Nerven, eine neue Sprache zu lernen. Es macht aber auch viel Spaß. Vor allem wenn man das Gelernte gleich im richtigen Land anwenden kann.

EN • If you LOVE travelling as much as I do and just don’t want to have an ugly gap in your CV, why not consider a complete change of location for a while? I was so fortunate to study abroad in China and Mexico and now as I am back in Germany I think about my next destination.
DE • Wenn ihr das Reisen genauso sehr liebt wie ich und die Freizeit einfach zu wenig ist, dann muss man früher oder später kreativ werden. Warum nicht einfach mal für eine Zeit mit dem Job ins Ausland gehen oder ein Auslandssemester machen während man noch studiert? Ich hatte während meines Studiums das Glück in China und Mexiko Auslandssemester machen zu können. Jetzt denke ich bereits über mein nächstes Ziel nach.

negotiation skills
EN • Another great way to develop your professional career is to learn to negotiate while you travel. Well… maybe not in Germany or the Nordics but when you are in a Market in Morocco, China or Mexico you better learn to bargain. This might come strange to you if you grew up in a country where prices are non-discussable. Over time I found that there aren’t many things more fun than debating with a seller on a market and no feeling better than buying at a “good” price.
DE • Ok.. vielleicht nicht gerade in Deutschland und auch nicht in den Nordics. Aber wenn ihr auch mal auf einem Markt in Marokko, China oder Mexiko wiederfindet, dann könnt ihr eure Verhandlungskünste üben. Diese “Eigenart” mag jedem, der nicht in in einem Land aufgewachsen ist, in dem feilschen normal ist, komisch vorkommen. Aber ich verspreche euch, wenn man länger in einem Land lebt, in dem der Preis Verhandlungssache ist, wird man schnell zum Experten.

EN • I like to stay in nice hotels, I really do. But when this means moving only within the hotel area, getting an “all-inclusive-vacation” without actually exploring the country, I’m out of it. To me there is nothing more exciting than experiencing the unknown. Getting to know the habits of other cultures and understanding why they act like this is essential for the development of your professional career. Especially if you aim to work in an international enterprise.
DE • Ich liebe es wirklich, in schönen Hotels zu sein. Wenn das allerdings bedeutet, dass ich von dem Land ich bereise, nichts mitbekomme, bin ich raus. Ich finde, es gibt beim Reisen nichts schlimmeres, als in einer “All-In-Hotelblase” gefangen zu sein. So bekommt man nichts von Kultur des Landes, das man bereist mit. Dabei ist es heutzutage wirklich wichtig, andere Kulturen kennen zu lernen und zu verstehen. Vor allem wenn man in einem internationalen Unternehmen arbeiten möchte.
Build up a large network
EN • Another great way to develop a professional career is to network while travelling. To travel means to connect. Having friends from all over the world working in different fields and companies is just great. It’s so much fun to exchange ideas and hear their stories. Also it can be, that you can help someone with their career or you get help with yours if needed.
DE • Reisen heißt für mich, neue Leute kennen zu lernen. Deshalb baut man mit dem Reisen ein immer größeres Netzwerk an Freunden und Kontakten auf der ganzen Welt auf. Dieses Netzwerk ist toll für eine Karriere denn es ist wunderschön sich mit Freunden auf der ganzen Welt auszutauschen. So kann man sich gegenseitig auch bei Karrierethemen unterstützen.

Ich bin auch der Meinung, dass man nie genug gereist sein kann. Zumindest reicht es mir nie! 😉
In China zu studieren stelle ich mir sehr herausfordernd (wegen der Sprache und den Schrifzeichen) vor. Aber sicher war es auch ein großes Abenteuer!

Das kann ich absolut nachvollziehen! Ich reise auch soo so gerne. Jaa China war wirklich “a bumpy ride” aber am Ende habe ich es dort so geliebt, dass ich gar nicht mehr nach Hause wollte 😀
Ich würde sagen du hast alles richtig gemacht! Ein Auslandssemster in Mexiko und China, prägt definitiv! Und das mit dem verhandeln kann ich auch bestätigen, war gerade erst in Indien für 4,5 Monate und dort sind einfach alle Businessmänner, egal ob im Hostel, auf dem Markt, beim Yoga Retreat oder beim Rikscha Fahrer, ohne verhandeln geht gar nix! Außerdem: fragen kostet nichts und mehr als nein sagen können sie eh nicht 😉
