Sleeping in a Jungle Villa in Thailand: The Hideout Koh Yao Noi

The Hideout Koh Yao Noi Tree House Travel Blogger Jungle Villa

EN • The sun went down between 6 and 7 pm and by 8pm there it was fully dark. It was just us and the sounds of the jungle. Without electricity there was not much to do other than following the rhythm of nature and sleep. There I was lying in a jungle villa in Thailand, surrounded by nature. I felt free, excited and scared at the same time. For that reason it was not that easy to feel fully comfortable to fall asleep.

Sleeping in a Jungle Villa in Thailand

EN • Sleeping in a jungle villa in Thailand has always been on my list.  That’s why we decided in the middle of our Thailand trip to go a bit off the beaten track and took a little detour to a very small island called Koh Yao Noi. Is still is touristy (like almost all other islands of Thailand) with the difference that on this little island you will find almost only expensive luxury resorts. The hideout is somewhat far from civilisation in the middle of the the jungle. You need to take a long, unpaved road with many deep holes and bumps to get there.

The Hideout – What you need to know

EN • The tree houses are simply beautiful. There are 4 jungle villas and one main house with an infinity pool over the jungle and a restaurant area. The upper part of the main house you reach via stairs and bridges and once you arrive you have a breathtaking view over the jungle and the adjacent sea. In the villas themselves you have a big bedroom with a view in the upper floor. The bed was spacious and had a mosquito net all around that kept us save. There is also a hammock, a small closet, a table and a chair and two loungers. In the ground floor you have big bathroom with a bathtub and a shower with rainwater.

mixed feelings

EN • Back in the days it must have been a very nice retreat however COVID did leave its marks. We were the only guests around which made the whole place appear a bit lost. I saw an old sign for morning yoga sessions but where was nothing like that. The restaurant kitchen was not operating so they did get takeout from another place far away. So we paid tripple the price for Thai food that arrived cold. Also the place was not taken care of: Rotten floors and holes in the ground around the pool (definitely dangerous). Unfortunately the roof of our villa had a hole too, so the rain water came in. There were storms with thunder, lighting and rain everyday and we just did not feel save. There was a beehive next to the shower which was … interesting too! All in all I was disappointed with this experience of a place that has a lot of potential.

What I wore in the Jungle

EN • To make our stay in the Jungle as comfy as possible I was strictly sticking to my loungewear policy. (nice looking) PJ’s all day!  I mean what’s better clothing than that for laying in the hammock, in bed or by the pool all day? These days were made to switch off, read a book and disconnect from the hustle. My short version was perfect during the day when the hot temperatures were peaking. The long version kept me mostly save from mosquito bites during the evening and night.

The verdict

EN • I love nature and it was definitely an interesting experience but to be 100% honest, we were happy to leave again. I am sure that The Hideout was an amazing place back in the days before COVID started. Now it reminded me a little of sleeping in a lost place (and paying a lot for it). In general I would try another jungle villa in Thailand again, however do my homework on the research a bit better.

What gorgeous photos! But yes – the place does sound a bit run down. Staying next to a beehive? No thank you!

Yes that is exactly what I though! Still I loved the architecture of that place and hope they will better take care of it!
