EN • Always dreamt of growing your own business while working in your normal 9-5? Get ready for night shifts and over hours! No kidding, if you plan to have a creative side hustle, and want to make it serious in 2020 you have to know what you’re getting into. However it’s not mission impossible! Here’s how I combine my challenging 9-5 and my creative side hustle, namely MeetMiri.com and my Instagram.
DE • Hast du schon immer davon geträumt, dein eigenes Business aufzubauen, während du erst mal in deinem normalen Job arbeitest? Mach dich bereit für Nachtschichten und Überstunden! Jetzt mal im Ernst, so einfach wie es aussieht ist es nicht. Egal ob man nebenbei einen Blog betreibt, Instagram zum Business macht, eine Fotografie-Karriere anstrebt: Dieses Vorhaben will gut geplant sein. Trotzdem ist es nicht unmöglich. Hier sind all die Grundsätze, die ich für wichtig erachte und befolge damit MeetMiri und mein Instagram neben meinem normalen Job läuft.
You gotta love it
EN • If you play with the thought of having a creative side hustle next to your 9-5, you have to be absolutely sure that you will love it and are passionate about it. Cause it will cost you free time and most likely also some money.
DE • Wenn du mit dem Gedanken spielst, ein Business neben deinem Job zu gründen, musst du dir sicher sein, dass du mit Leidenschaft dabei sein kannst. Denn nur so kannst du die extra investierte Zeit und Geld vor dir selbst rechtfertigen.
You need good time management
EN • Good time management is a MUST. When I get home from my 9-5 I often work on the blog, edit pictures, write texts or answer emails. I have a time slot planned for every task. That way I make sure to handle the workload in the right manner.
DE • Gutes Zeitmanagement ist ein MUSS! Wenn ich abends von der Arbeit komme, arbeite ich oft noch eine Stunde (oder auch mal zwei) für den Blog weiter. Dabei habe ich für jede Aufgabe eine feste Zeit eingeplant. Nur so kannst du sicher stellen, dass du dich nicht vor lauter Arbeit überschlägst.
Be prepared to grow
EN • We are talking real money here. A side hustle should not only have the purpose to put your creative side into practice. It should also (like a real business) make some money. Growing means not only more money but also more work. Having a growth plan for your business and inevitable. It’s important to have plans of “emergency” in place to keep the business up and running.
DE • Wir reden hier über Business, sprich über Geld! Eine kreative Nebentätigkeit soll an dieser Stelle nicht nur den Zweck haben, dich auszubalancieren. Sie sollte sich auch bezahlt machen. Mit Wachstum kommt nicht nur mehr Geld sondern meist auch mehr Arbeit. Ein “Wachstumsplan” ist immer eine gute Idee. Wann planst du, jemanden anzustellen oder bestimmte Tätigkeiten extern zu vergeben? Darüber muss man sich auf jeden Fall Gedanken machen.
Don’t be overly perfectionist
EN • I remember when I started out with my blog and Instagram, I looked at every single picture a hundred times to make sure everything was perfect. Today I can not afford that luxury anymore. I shoot and post so many pictures that I simply don’t have the time to be overly perfectionist. But don’t worry, over time I improved my editing and photography skills. So there is no need to check everything twice.
DE • Ich erinnere mich noch gut daran, wie es war den Blog zu starten. Ich habe immer ewig gebraucht, bis jedes einzelne Bild perfekt war. Heute habe ich da ein geschulteres Auge. Das bedeutet, ich verbringe nicht mehr so viel Zeit mit den Details, bin nicht mehr so perfektionistisch und habe Routine bekommen.
Be the most organised version of yourself
EN • Getting your creative side hustle’s tasks done “quickly somehow in between” is NOT AN OPTION. I never mix up my jobs. Therefore I avoid to check my blog or Instagram while I am at my 9-5 job. It simply wouldn’t be fair. Any of the two jobs deserve 100% of my attention. I need a clear mind for both of my jobs. Separating them strictly helps me to stay focused. Having a fixed schedule is my #1 reason why this and did not end up in a big mess (yet).
DE • Wenn du diesen Job ernst nimmst, ist improvisieren oft keine wirklich Option. Alles sollte geplant und organisiert sein. Ich versuche, beide Jobs so genau wie möglich zu trennen. Beide Jobs verdienen 100% meiner Aufmerksamkeit. Wenn ich auf der Arbeit bin, checke ich nicht den Blog oder mein Instagram und wenn ich für mein Business arbeite, checke ich keine Arbeitsmails. Nur so kann ich sicher stellen, dass ich gut performe.
Invest in good equipment
EN • Don’t waste time. Sometimes an investment such as a good camera, an extra lens, a new and faster computer, or an expensive software can ease your work by a hundred times. When you try to balance your creative side hustle with your main job, don’t hesitate to make such investments rather sooner than later, they will save you much time and eventually also money.
DE • Verschwende keine Zeit mit schlechtem Equipment. Manchmal muss man einfach ein bisschen mehr ausgeben, um eine gute Kamera, einen guten Computer oder die schnellste Software zu kaufen. Vor allem wenn man das creative side hustle mit dem 9-5 Job kombiniert. Damit kann man sich die Arbeit einfach um vieles erleichtern und so viel Zeit sparen.
Know your limits
EN • As I mentioned earlier, a creative side hustle is a real job. In order to avoid having a burn out, you have to know where your limits are. Therefore, have some offline time every know and then and listen to your body. Being successful, happy, creative and making money is good but you also have to enjoy your life in the meantime.
DE • Ein kreatives Nebenbusiness ist ein richtiger Job. Damit du dich nicht überarbeitest, solltest du wissen wo deine Grenzen sind. Es tut so gut, einfach mal offline zu sein und einen Tag für sich zu genießen. Wenn ich auf meinen Körper höre, weiß ich meistens, wann ich eine Pause brauche. Erfolgreich, glücklich, kreativ zu sein und dabei auch noch Geld zu machen, macht definitiv Spaß. Aber dabei vergesse ich nie, das Leben auch noch zu genießen.
Team up with others
EN • Teaming up with other creatives helped me A LOT in the process of growing my side business. Listening to others’ best practices and learn about their way to handle their creative side hustle is important for your own growth. Also it means that you can be social at the same time. Having two or more jobs can result in becoming anti-social as you invest a lot of time there. Meeting other bloggers and photographers did not only strengthen my network and improved my work, it also made my creative side hustle so much more fun.
DE • Wenn man ein Business hat, ist der Austausch mit anderen einfach super wichtig. Nur so kann man in einer Branche Fuß fassen. Ich liebe es, mich hier in Barcelona mit anderen Kreativen zu treffen. So lerne ich vieles dazu und erweitere mein Netzwerk. Arbeiten und derweil socialisen ist definitiv eine der besten Seiten an diesem Job.
Be ready to outsource
EN • If you seriously work on your creative side hustle I can promise you, you will hit a point where the workload gets too intense. Usually this would be the time to hire help. If you don’t want to be a boss or can not afford the extra workforce, be ready to outsource. I use platforms like Upwork or Fiverr to find help for a certain project or period of time.
DE • Wenn du darüber nachdenkst, ein wachsendes Business auf die Beine zu stellen, wird der Punkt kommen, an dem der Arbeitsaufwand zu hoch für eine Person wird. Dann ist es Zeit, jemanden mit an Board zu holen. Wenn du dir das aber erstmal nicht leisten kannst oder möchtest, kannst du auch ganz einfach Projekte vergeben und diese extern erledigen lassen. Ich finde auf Plattformen wir Upwork oder Fiverr oft Hilfe für einzelne Aufgaben.
