EN • If you follow me on Instagram you might have noticed that I’m about to move to the city of my dreams: Barcelona. I remember that the first time was in 2016 and it was love at first sight. So I’ve visited Barcelona several times to visit friends and for vacation. But this time it will be different: Barcelona will be my new home!
DE • Wenn ihr mir auf Instagram folgt, habt ihr es bestimmt schon mitbekommen. Ich dabei in die Stadt meiner Träume zu ziehen: Nach Barcelona! Die Stadt ist einfach wunderschön und ich kann wirklich sagen, dass es Liebe auf den ersten Blick war. Ich war schon oft in Barcelona um Freunde zu besuchen oder Urlaub zu machen. Aber diesmal ist es etwas anderes: Barcelona wird mein Zuhause!
Why move to Barcelona?
EN • I just love the Barcelona vibe, the beautiful houses with the small balconies, the cute cafés and restaurants and the open minded people. The main reason for me to move to Barcelona was that this city has so much to offer: Beautiful beaches, a lot of culture and mountains where you can get a break from the city, go hiking or skiing.
DE • Barcelona vermittelt einfach ein tolles Lebensgefühl: Ich liebe die tollen Häuser mit den kleinen typischen Balkonen, die süßen Cafés und die tollen Restaurants. Der Hauptgrund für mich, nach Barcelona zu ziehen war, dass diese Stadt so viel zu bieten hat. Das Meer, viel Kultur und tolle Berge im Hinterland in denen man mal eine Pause von der Stadt bekommt und wandern oder Ski fahren kann.
What to consider when moving to another country
EN • The past weeks were quite busy because there was so much to organise. Of course there are more things to consider when you move abroad compared to just moving within your home country. So in this post I want to share all the details I’ve gone through. Here’s everything you need to consider when moving to another country.
EN • Die vergangenen Wochen waren etwas turbulent. Natürlich muss man mehr bedenken und organisieren wenn man in ein anderes Land zieht. Deshalb möchte ich in diesem Post all die Details mit euch teilen, die es zu beachten gilt, wenn man in ein anderes Land zieht.
The Job
EN • The Job comes first. To me it was simply important to have a good job after graduating to kick off my career. So BEFORE I did anything else, I started applying for jobs and did interviews via Skype from Germany. I moved AFTER I go the job offer. Having a job in the new country gives you all the security (and documents) you need for a longterm stay.
DE • Für mich war der Job das allerste und wichtigste, um das ich mich gekümmert habe. Mir war es einfach wichtig, nach meinem Abschluss einen guten Job zu bekommen um meine Karriere zu starten. Deshalb habe ich mich aus Deutschland heraus beworben und Interviews via Skype geführt. Ein Job gibt einem einfach die Sicherheit (und Papiere) die man für einen Langzeitaufenthalt braucht.
EN • Where to find jobs abroad? LinkedIn is my favourite website to look for jobs. Indeed and Glassdoor are also good addresses to look for a job internationally. Also if you looking for Spain in particular, infojobs is another well-known website.
DE • Wie findet man Jobs im Ausland? Am liebsten suche ich Jobs auf LinkedIn. Außerdem gibt es auf Indeed und Glassdoor viele Angebote wenn ihr international nach Jobs sucht. Die Seite infojobs ist in Spanien sehr beliebt.
The paperwork
EN • As european citizen I didn’t have to bother with Visa applications. But no matter which country you choose to live in, inform yourself about all the visa requirements and documents you might need to immigrate to another country. In my case I only needed to get the working permit (NIE), a social security number and a bank account in order to work and get properly registered in Barcelona.
DE • Als Europäerin musste ich mich nicht mit der Bewerbung für ein Visum herumschlagen. Wäre ich nun aber in ein anderes Land in Übersee gezogen, hätte das ganz anders ausgesehen. Generell sollte man sich immer informieren, welche Papiere man benötigt, um in ein anderes Land einzuwandern. Um mich in Barcelona niederzulassen brauche ich nur meine Arbeitserlaubnis (NIE), eine Sozialversicherungsnummer und ein Konto.
How to get the paperwork done? The paperwork differs from country to country. Inform yourself what you may need to immigrate to the country of your dreams ahead! Dependent on the country the process will take some time.
Wie erledige ich den Papierkram? Der “Papierkram” ist von Land zu Land unterschiedlich. Informiere dich, welche Dokumente du brauchst, um in dass Land deiner Wahl einzuwandern. Je nach Land wird der Vorgang einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen.
The apartment
EN • When I decided to move to Barcelona I had specific requirements of my future apartment in mind. Searching for THE perfect place to stay is always fun. While visiting new apartments you can imagine everything: dream about your perfect apartment and how you gonna furnish it. In the end you need to have a space that feels like home. A place to relax and calm down after a stressful day.
DE • Als ich mich dazu entschieden habe, nach Barcelona zu ziehen, hatte ich schon die perfekte Wohnung vor meinem inneren Auge. Ich finde Wohnungsbesichtigungen regen immer zum träumen an. Man kann sich vorstellen, wie man alles einrichten möchte und wie die perfekte Wohnung aussehen soll. Am Ende ist es wichtig, dass die neue Wohnung zu einem echten Zuhause wird, zu einem Ort an dem man sich wohl fühlen und von einer stressigen Arbeitswoche erholen kann.
EN • Where to find a new home? Platforms like Idealista, spotahome or Badi helped me to find my new home.
DE • Wie findet man eine neue Wohnung? Auf Plattformen wie Idealista, spotahome oder Badi habe ich ein perfektes Zuhause für mich gefunden.
a fresh start
EN • Moving to a new city means a fresh start. So you should decide how you want to spend your time. What passions do you have? Do you want to go to the gym, do yoga classes or join a writing club? Imagine, everything is possible!
DE • In eine neue Stadt zu ziehen bedeutet, einen Neuanfang zu wagen. Deshalb sollte man sich Gedanken darüber machen, wie man am liebsten seine Freizeit verbringen möchte. Zum Beispiel im Fitnessstudio, mit einem Yoga-Kurs oder vielleicht einem Schreibclub beitreten? Es gibt so viel Auswahl!
EN • No matter where I travel to, local apps are my biggest helpers to get around. I always use the local metro app, an app to rent bikes and Uber. Also my latest discovery is sharify, an app to see which events happen around me.
DE • Egal wohin ich reise, Apps helfen mir immer mich an einem neuen Ort zu recht zu finden. In Barcelona nutze ich die Barcelona metro app, bicing oder Uber. Meine neuste Entdeckung ist Sharify, eine App die mir all die Events anzeigt, die in meiner Umgebung stattfinden.
new friends
EN • When I told people that I will move to Barcelona, most of them asked “Aren’t you afraid that you’re all alone without friends and family?” No I am absolutely not. I look forward to meeting new people and there are so many possibilities to find new contacts.
DE • Als ich meinen Freunden und Familie erzählt habe, dass ich nach Barcelona ziehen werde, wurde ich oft gefragt, ob ich keine Angst davor hätte alleine auszuwandern. Nein das habe ich nicht. Ich freue mich viel mehr darauf neue Freunde zu finden und es gibt so viele Wege, wie man neue Kontakte knüpfen kann.
EN • How to get in contact? In the hostel in the beginning, in the gym or in one of the various facebook or meet up groups. If you do it the right way you can even find friends on Tinder or Jodel.
DE • How to get in contact? Im Hostel am Anfang habe ich gleich Leute kennen gelernt, im Fitnessstudio oder in einer der zahlreichen Facebook und Meetup Gruppen die gleiche Interessen teilen. Sogar auf Tinder oder Jodel kann man Freunde finden, wenn man es nur richtig anstellt.

Barcelona liebe ich auch total. Ich war schon einige Male dort und habe noch nicht alles gesehen. Toll, dass du jetzt dorthin ziehst.
Übrigens nutze ich auch die App Uber. Schade, dass es sie in Deutschland nicht gibt. Wir hatten sie in Südafrika und dort fand ich sie besser als ein Taxi.

08/25/2019Vielen Dank für die lieben Worte Sabine! Schön, dass du Barcelona genau so toll findest wie ich ! Ich finde es auch schade, dass Uber in Deutschland keine Anwendung findet. Wir haben dafür einfach zu viele Regeln und Gesetze. In anderen Ländern sind sie wirklich oft besser als ein Taxi.

08/21/2019Liebe Miri, wow – Barcelona ist einfach eine ganz wunderbare Stadt. Ich dürfte sie vor einigen Jahre mal besuchen und das spanische Flair ist mir noch deutlich in Erinnerung. Du hast dich wirklich gut vorbereitet und bist total strukturiert an deinen Umzug nach Barcelona herangegangen. Toll, dass es mit dem Job so gut geklappt hat und ich wünsche dir jetzt schon viel Erfolg an deinem neuen Arbeitsplatz. Da in unserer Familie Mitglieder auch berufsbedingt ins nähere und fernere Ausland gezogen sind, habe ich mitbekommen, wie viele Formalitäten und Vorbereitungsarbeit hierbei erforderlich ist.

08/22/2019Das klingt ja toll und ich kann deine Entscheidung soo gut nachvollziehen. Barcelona gehört zu meinen absoluten Lieblingsstädten und ich könnte mir echt gut vorstellen, dort zu leben. Ich war auch bereits schon für ein halbes Jahr in Spanien und seit dem zeiht es mich immer wieder da hin. Vielleicht klappt es ja auch bei mir nach der Uni. Was genau arbeitest du denn dann dort?
