EN • Those of you who have been following me for a while know that I love to travel and I do it whenever I can. I have lived I Mexico and Shanghai, did backpacking in Sri Lanka, Cuba and Bali, went to the United States and many countries more.

In 2018 I had the pleasure to travel around Europe and experience some of the most beautiful European capitals such as Madrid, Zagreb, Berlin, Paris and Barcelona. Travelling has taught me a lot and what I learned about myself was that I always need a comfy, beautiful place of retreat.

DE • Diejenigen von euch, die mir schon länger folgen wissen, dass ich es liebe zu reisen. Ich habe in Mexiko und Shanghai gelebt, bin mit dem Rucksack durch Sri Lanka, Kuba und Bali gereist und habe noch viele weitere Länder gesehen.

Im letzten Jahr war ich in Madrid, Zagreb, Berlin, Paris und Barcelona unterwegs. Ich habe beim Reisen viel über mich selbst gelernt und eine Sache davon war, dass ich immer einen gemütlichen, schönen Rückzugsort brauche an dem ich mich wie Zuhause fühlen kann.

before picking the perfect stay

1 check on the neighbourhood.

EN • There is no point in staying in a perfectly designed apartment or chic hotel if the neighbourhood is shady and you feel insecure. Especially when I travel alone or with girlfriends I make sure to be in a spot where I feel safe walking around at night. Tipp: To find the perfect stay, read about the hotspots of a city and pick your hotel or Airbnb accordingly. I personally love to stay in artist’s districts such as Montmarte in Paris or Malasana in Madrid.

DE • Es nicht wirklich schön, in einem tollen Appartement oder Hotel zu sein, das in einer schlechten Gegend liegt. Vor allem wenn ich alleine oder mit Freundinnen reise, ist es mir wichtig, dass ich mich auch in der Umgebung wohl und sicher fühle. Tipp: Informiere dich vorher über die Stadtteile. Ich wohne zum Beispiel gerne in den Künstlervierteln, wie Montmarte in Paris oder Malasana in Madrid.

2 Find out the truth

EN • When clicking through the booking sites, you see shiny images everywhere. Still, sometimes when you arrive it’s not shiny at all. Keep in mind that pictures often feature only the biggest room, were taken from a special angle, or edited. They often do not tell the entire truth. Therefore I love searching the place in Google, Instagram or Facebook to see pictures from other travellers. Those are often more realistic.

DE •  Wenn man sich durch die Buchungsseiten klickt, sieht man immer die schönsten Bilder. Dass diese Bilder oft nicht der Realität entsprechen ist eher ernüchternd. Behaltet immer im Hinterkopf, dass oft nur der größte Raum des Hotels fotografiert wird. Außerdem ist der Winkel oft so gewählt, dass alles größer wirkt. Auch die Belichtung wird meist noch etwas angepasst. Deshalb suche ich immer auf Google, Instagram oder Facebook nach Bildern die andere Gäste hochgeladen haben. Das entspricht oft mehr der Realität.

3. Privacy please – decide what’s the perfect match for you

EN • Let’s talk about the question if it’s better to stay in an Airbnb or a Hotel. Well, there is no definite answer to that question. I’d say it depends on the kind of holiday, the budget and your own preferences. I LOVE Airbnb cause it offers more privacy (if you have the place to yourself) –  you don’t have to see anyone if you don’t like. Of course, have much more space for your money. You don’t have to show up in time for breakfast and it just feels super personal.

Also, I did a couple of times Airbnb where the owner was present.  I loved getting to know more about the region and making new friends. Hotels on the other hand offer so much more service, you have an in-house restaurant and can expect a certain standard. Tipp: When I want to have service but also privacy, look out for boutique hotels, there are usually smaller and more individualized ones.

DE • Nun zur Frage, ob Airbnb oder Hotel eigentlich besser ist. Auf diese Frage gibt es meiner Meinung nach keine eindeutige Antwort. Ich würde sagen das hängt ganz von der Art des Urlaubs, dem Budget und eigenen Präferenzen ab. Ich LIEBE Airbnb einfach weil man mehr Privatsphäre hat, (wenn man ein ganzes Apartment mietet). Man hat viel mehr Platz fürs gleiche Geld und muss sich nicht nach Essenszeiten richten. Noch dazu ist es einfach viel persönlicher. Ich war ein paar Mal in einem Airbnb, in dem der Eigentümer auch anwesend war. Für mich war das immer eine schöne Erfahrung, jemanden Neues kennenzulernen und mehr über die Stadt zu erfahren.

Auf der anderen Seite, bieten Hotels einfach einen besseren Service. Ein gewisser Standard ist gesichert und man hat ein Restaurant gleich im Haus. Tipp: Wenn ihr auf den  Service nicht verzichten wollt, aber auch Privatsphäre haben möchtet, haltet Ausschau nach Boutique-Hotels, die normalerweise kleiner und individueller sind.

4. Find out about the downsides

EN • To find the perfect stay, read the reviews and find out how previous guests felt about their stay. I especially like to click trough the negative ones. Based on this, I decide whether I can live with the possible downsides of a place or not. Best example for this is construction work. It may happen that you picked the perfect place but it is currently under construction which will cause noise, dirt etc. The hotel staff isn’t likely to tell you this in advance – but you can bet that previous guests will let you know!

DE • Bevor ich eine Unterkunft buche, schaue ich mir immer erstmal alle Bewertungen an – und zwar die negativen! Natürlich möchte ich mir meinen Urlaub nicht im Voraus madig machen, aber es ist doch schön, zu wissen was einen erwarten könnte. Dann kann man immer noch entscheiden ob es schlimm für einen selbst ist, oder nicht. Klassisches Beispiel: Man hat sich also ein super schönes und auch nicht ganz billiges Hotel raus gesucht. Leider bauen die aber gerade ein bisschen um, das heißt es könnte zu Lärm- oder Schmutzbelästigung kommen. Es ist ziemlich wahrscheinlich, dass das Hotel einem das nicht mitteilt –  die letzen Besucher jedoch schon.

EN • So, there is no number 5 here – sorry! 5 just sounded better than 4. Since I promised myself to always be honest with you, I realised that there is no point in making up a number 5. The 4 points I mentioned before, are the top things I consider before booking an Airbnb or hotel. Da ich mir selbst versprochen habe, auf meinem Blog immer ehrlich zu sein, habe ich gedacht, es macht keinen Sinn einfach noch eine Nummer 5 zu erfinden.
