Best Underwater Photography Tips for Bloggers

 EN • No matter if for Instagram, Pinterst, the blog or  your family album: Underwater pictures are just the next level of vacation photos. A long time I used to struggle to take good underwater photos and to be fair it is not as simple as it looks! Today I want to share the key lessons I learned while I improved my underwater photography.

DE • Egal ob auf Instagram, Pinterest im Blog oder im Familienalbum. Unterwasserbilder sind ein ganz anderes Level von Urlaubsfotos. Lange habe ich damit gekämpft, gute Unterwasserfotos zu machen, und ehrlich gesagt ist es nicht so einfach, wie es aussieht! Heute möchte ich die wichtigsten Lektionen teilen, die ich gelernt habe, während ich meine Unterwasserfotografie verbessert habe.

Underwater Gear I swear by

EN • Filming of shooting underwater pictures you want to have gear that actually does the job. I know that most phones are nowadays waterproof. However that does not mean that you can simply take them to any depth. So I use our GoPro Hero 8 with different types of add on gear to get high quality underwater photography.

DE • Beim Filmen oder Fotografieren von Unterwasserbildern sollte man eine Ausrüstung haben, die tatsächlich funktioniert. Ich weiß, dass die meisten Handys heutzutage wasserdicht sind. Das bedeutet jedoch nicht, dass man damit einfach runter tauchen und sie einfach in jede Tiefe mitnehmen kann. Für solche Aktionen liebe ich unsere GoPro Hero 8 mit verschiedenen Arten von Zusatzausrüstung, um qualitativ hochwertige Unterwasserfotos zu machen.

Planning before the shooting

EN • Often it is a matter of seconds to dive down and up again. So there is not much time to get the perfect shot or video. Using your underwater photography gear in a way to get aesthetically pleasing pictures or videos is possible but needs planning. You have different options in doing that. For our couple pictures we had a friend with full diving gear (enough air to breathe) sitting on the bottom of the ocean to take photos of us. Beforehand we agreed on a list of poses we wanted to shoot. Patrick and me where free diving at the same time doing the poses. When our friend thought he had enough shots of one pose we moved on to the next one.

DE • Oft ist es eine Frage von Sekunden, um abzutauchen und wieder aufzutauchen. Trotzdem kann ich mit meiner Unterwasser-Fotoausrüstung ästhetisch ansprechende Bilder oder Videos bekommen. Das erfordert vor allem Planung und Geduld. Für unsere Unterwasser Couplepotos hatten wir einen Freund mit voller Taucherausrüstung (genug Luft zum Atmen), auf dem Meeresboden saß, um Fotos von uns zu machen. Vorher  haben wir uns auf 5 verschiedene Posen geeinigt, die wir fotografieren wollten. Patrick und ich waren gleichzeitig beim Freitauchen und machten die Posen. Als unser Freund dachte, er hätte genug Aufnahmen von einer Pose, haben wir uns per Handzeichen abgestimmt die nächste zu versuchen.

Editing tipps and tricks

EN •  Even after you took the perfect shot often the colors are not on point of there is pollution in form of small bubbles are algae particles on the picture. I like to use Underwater Presets for Lightroom from Etsy to correct the colours nicely. Often the presets do not fit 100% and need small customisations to work on the specific image.

DE • Selbst nach der perfekten Aufnahme sind die Farben oft nicht gestochen scharf oder es gibt Verschmutzungen in Form von kleinen Bläschen oder Algenpartikeln auf dem Bild. Ich verwende gerne Underwater Presets für Lightroom von Etsy, um die Farben schön zu korrigieren. Oft passen die Presets nicht zu 100% und erfordern kleine Anpassungen, um am konkreten Bild zu arbeiten.

the importance of the right moment

EN •  Capturing the right moment is not so easy in underwater photography. Therefore its really a matter of doing one thing over and over again to shoot a lot of footage since it is hard to check on them on site. With a large amount of data you make sure that your dream shot or sequence is there.

DE • Den richtigen Moment in der Unterwasserfotografie abzupassen ist gar nicht so einfach. Daher muss man eine Pose oft immer und immer wieder wiederholen. Wichtig dabei ist dass man Spaß hat und so viele Bilder und Videos wie möglich aufnimmt. So kann man sicherstellen, dass hinterher etwas Gutes dabei ist.

Half underwater photography

EN • How to go half underwater pics where you see the land and also the ocean? Stop trying these with your phone its unlikely to work. The secret is the GoPro Dome a plastic dome that broadens the angle in a way that you can capture both: Under water and over water. Caution: the dome is super fragile and gets scratched easily – we have personal experience here 🙁

DE • Wie macht man Halb-Unterwasser-Bilder, auf denen man das Land und auch den Ozean sieht? Mit dem Handy jedenfalls nicht bzw. es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass dabei etwas gutes raus kommt.  Das Geheimnis ist der GoPro Dome, eine Halbkugel aus Plastik, die den Winkel so erweitert, dass man beides aufnehmen kann: unter Wasser und über Wasser. Achtung: die Kuppel ist super empfindlich und zerkratzt leicht – hier haben wir eigene Erfahrungen gemacht 🙁
