How I became a curly girl
EN • “How I became a curly girl” What kind of title is that? Well, some of you might think that you either have curls or you don’t. But that’s not the whole truth. If you have a curly hair texture but treat it the wrong way, the curls might never show and you might actually never discover your true curl.
DE • “Wie ich zum Curly Girl geworden bin” Was ist denn das für eine Überschrift? Einige von Euch werden jetzt denken, entweder man hat Locken oder eben nicht. Aber das ist nicht die ganze Wahrheit. Wenn du Locken hast, sie aber nicht richtig behandelst, dann werden sie vielleicht nie zum Vorschein kommen und du wirst deine definierten Locken nie kennenlernen.
Curly Hair – Socially accepted?
EN • If you have paying attention you might have noticed that there is quite a buzz around curly afro hair. People of color might feel offended if you pay too much attention to their hair, ask questions about it and try to touch it (Here’s more on that topic). From my point of view the whole conversation has historical roots. On the one hand there is the discrimination of black people throughout history and on the other there is the fact that if society talks about beauty ideals, long straight hair is always considered the most beautiful. As a result, beautiful little curly girls with a start to feel ugly at young age… which is unfortunate to say the least.
DE • Es ist dir vielleicht schon aufgefallen, dass es immer mal wieder Diskussionen rund um das Thema Afro-Haare gibt. Es kann mit unter verletzend sein, wenn man viele Fragen über seine Haare gestellt bekommt. Wenn Fremde einem einfach unvermittelt in Haare fassen oder Afro Haare als etwas “unnormales” darstellen. Ich denke, das dieses Thema für viele so schwierig ist, hat unter anderem geschichtliche Hintergründe. Auf der einen Seite durch jahrhundertelange Diskriminierung von Schwarzen und auf der anderen Seite durch vorherrschende Schönheitsideale. Meistens werden Frauen mit langen glatten Haaren als Schönheitsvorbild idealisiert. Das führt dazu, dass schon junge Mädchen mit Locken beginnen sich als hässlich zu sehen.
Movies about curly girls
EN • I love that there are some movies out there that pick up the topic of “struggles with natural hair”. I especially loved the movie “Nappily ever after” a Netflix movie that portraits a curly girl that always hides her natural hair in order to fit in higher society circles.
EN • Ich finde es einfach wunderbar, dass es mittlerweile einige Filme zum Thema “Leben mit Locken” gibt. Zum Beispiel “Nappily ever after” ein Netflix-Film, der eine Frau mit Locken porträtiert, das ihr natürliches Haar versteckt, um in Kreise der höheren Gesellschaft zu passen.
Caring for natural hair
EN • Being born and raised in Germany it was quite a journey to educate myself about how to treat curly afro hair. First and foremost because curly hair does not equal curly hair. There are so many types of curls and waves that a matrix was developed to classify hair types. Your type of hair depends on your origin. My roots for instance are german-ghanaian and I have a 4c natural hair type. Throughout my hair journey where I learned a lot about myself and my hair I found these 3 pillars the most important:
DE • Ich bin Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen und für mich war es eine lange Lernkurve, mich über den Umgang mit Afro-Haar zu informieren. In erster Linie, weil lockiges Haar nicht gleich lockiges Haar ist. Es gibt so viele Arten Haaren, dass eine Matrix entwickelt wurde, um Haartypen zu klassifizieren. Ich würde sagen, der Haartyp hängt von der Herkunft ab. Meine Wurzeln zum Beispiel sind deutsch-ghanaisch und mein Haartyp ist 4c. Während ich meine Haare “kennengelernt” habe, fand ich diese 3 Themen am wichtigsten:

EN • I needed to read a lot about afro hair and how to treat it. To share all my learnings would go to far within this post. Still I want to recommend you the book “Curly Girl Method” to get your mindset straight and start caring about your curls to show.
DE • Ich habe viel über die Pflege von Afro Haar gelesen. All das Gelernte heute mit euch zu teilen, würde den Rahmen sprengen. Allerdings kann ich das Buch “The Curly Girl Method” nur empfehlen um mehr über deine Locken und deren richtige Pflege zu lernen.
EN • Always know that you are not alone on this journey to get to know your hair. There are so so many fellow curly girls who may have struggle with the same questions and issues as you. You can find them sharing their knowledge all over Instagram, Youtube and Pinterest.
DE • Es ist wichtig zu wissen, dass man nicht alleine auf der Reise ist um seine Locken genauer kennenzulernen. Es gibt viele Lockenmädchen mit vielen Fragen aber auch einige mit vielen Infos zur Haarpflege. Manche von ihnen habe ich über die Social Media Channels wie Instagram, Youtube und Pinterest gefunden.
EN • I tried many many wrong products before I found the right ones. After all I came to the conclusion that natural products are the best. Curls don’t like harsh treatment with sulfates, silicones, parabenes, mineral oil and so on. Today I only use natural products.
DE • Ich habe viele, viele falsche Produkte ausprobiert, bevor ich die richtigen gefunden habe. Am Ende bin ich zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass Naturprodukte die besten sind. Locken mögen keine harte Behandlung mit Sulfaten, Silikonen, Parabenen, Mineralöl etc. Heute verwende ich nur noch Produkte, die extra für Afro-Haare hergestellt werden.
