Off the Bucket List: San Francisco

EN • Last week was intense to be because it was a week of “fist times”. I saw for the first time in my life a runway show. I went for the first time in my life to the United States and I was able to cross San Francisco off the bucket list. I can really say that I am blessed and thankful for this week. I got invited by a dear friend to stay with him for a long weekend in Oakland (30 min to SF). He showed me wonderful places: the Yosemite National Park (talked about that in the previous post) and San Francisco. In this article I want to share my 32 hours in San Francisco with you.

DE • Letzte Woche war wirklich intensiv! Es war die Woche der “ersten Male”. Ich habe zum ersten mal eine größere Modenschau gesehen und war zum ersten mal in den USA, ich war zum ersten Mal in San Francisco. Ein guter Freund hatte mich eingeladen ein langes Wochenende bei ihm in Oakland (30 min von SF mit der Fähre) zu verbringen. Er hat mir während meines Wochenendes wunderschöne Orte: den Yosemite National Park und San Francisco gezeigt. Ich bin sehr froh und dankbar für diese Erlebnisse! In diesem Artikel möchte ich meine 32 Stunden in San Francisco mit euch teilen.

10 AM – Take the Ferry and have lunch at Fisherman’s Wharf

EN • Saturday Morning we took the Ferry from Oakland to San Francisco. It was amazing to see the impressive skyline of the city from outside. We got lucky because that weekend was fleet week, which takes place only once a year. Many people had arrived on the beach and the surrounding parks to see the air show of the blue angles, the US Navy’s flight demonstration squadron. It were festival-like vibes in the city. If you are exploring the surroundings of Fisherman’s Wharf, you really have to try the seafood which is typical in San Francisco.

DE • Samstagmorgen haben wir die Fähre von Oakland nach San Francisco genommen. Es war unglaublich, die beeindruckende Skyline der Stadt von außen zu sehen. Wir sind am Fisherman’s Wharf von Board gegangen und sind anschließend ein bisschen die Promenade entlang gebummelt. Wenn ihr mal Umgebung von Fisherman’s Wharf erkundet, müsst ihr unbedingt die leckeren Meeresfrüchte probieren für die San Francisco berühmt ist. Wir hatten Glück, denn an diesem Wochenende war “fleet week”, die nur einmal im Jahr stattfindet. Da gibt es soo viele beeindruckende Flug-Shows der Fliegerstaffel der US Navy. Viele Leute haben sich am Strand und in den umliegenden Parks mit Picknick-Ausrüstung versammelt, um die Flugschau der Blue Angles zu sehen. Es war fast, als ob die gesamte Stadt sich in ein Festival umgewandelt hätte.

1 AM – Check-in time!

EN • We checked into The Zeppelin Hotel . Its a modern design hotel located only one block from the Union Square, a hot spot of San Francisco where all the shops are at. I really loved the furniture in the room and the public spaces of the hotel.

DE • Während unseres Aufenthaltes wohnten wir im Zeppelin Hotel, einem super schönen, modernen Design-Hotel das nur einen Block vom Union Square, einem der Hot Spots von San Francisco, entfernt ist. In dieser Gegend befinden sich alle Geschäfte. Ich fand vor allem die Einrichtung des Hotels toll!

3 PM – Greet the Painted Ladies

EN • In an Uber we headed to our next stop the Painted Ladies, those famous colorful houses in the heart of SF next to a really nice park. You can take a picnic blanket and just enjoy the view for a while.

DE • In einem Uber sind wir dann zu unserem nächsten Ziel gefahren: zu den Painted Ladies. Diese berühmten, bunten Häuser im Herzen von SF sind wirklich ein Highlight! Direkt daneben ist ein toller Park in dem man einfach nur sitzen mag, um die Aussicht zu genießen.

4 PM – Have a walk through the city

EN • Leaving the Ladies we had a walk through the city to get back to our hotel. When exploring SF by foot you’ll see all the beautiful houses, take many pictures and pass by the civic center where all the largest government and cultural buildings are located.

DE • Anschließend sind wir durch die Stadt, um zu unserem Hotel zurück spaziert. Wenn man SF zu Fuß erkundet, kann man sic all die schönen Häuser ganz genau ansehen (und tausende von Fotos machen) und man kommt durch den Stadtteil “Civic Center” wo sich die größten Regierungs- und Kulturgebäude wie z.b die Oper befinden.

5 PM – Go Shopping at Union Square

EN • after a short stopover in the hotel, I made my way to all the nice shops around Union Square to go a little crazy in the shops.

DE • Im Hotel angekommen habe ich eine kurze Pause eingelegt bevor es weiter zum Shopping beim Union Square ging… nunja was soll ich sagen.. shopping muss eben sein !

9 PM – End the day with a Burger and a Cocktail

EN • Afterwards I was really tired, starving and looking forward to have dinner. I got ready at the hotel (the location is really great!!) and we made our way to the in-bar Saratoga, which is approx. 4 blocks from the hotel. I really can recommend this place: their burgers are great and the cocktails even better, but its a bit pricey. To end the evening we went to a pub –  we were in the mood to meet people. Just one block from Saratoga is the pub Edinburg Castle, we had a lot of fun playing pool until it was time to go to home.

DE • Danach war ich wirklich etwas erledigt, hungrig und freute mich auf ein Abendessen. Zurück im Hotel, machten wir uns auf den Weg in die Bar Saratoga, welche ca. 4 Blocks vom Hotel entfernt ist. Ich kann das Saratoga wirklich empfehlen: Burger sind super lecker und die Cocktails noch besser, allerdings ist es ein bisschen teurer. Um den Abend zu beenden, haben wir dann nochmal die Bar gewechselt, da wir in der Stimmung waren Leute zu treffen. Nur einen Block vom Saratoga ist ein Pub, das Edinburg Castle. Dort haben wir noch ein paar Runden Billard gespielt bis es Zeit war heim zu gehen.

9 AM – Have breakfast at Honey Honey Polk Street

EN • …or in the hotel. But Honey Honey is in the same block as the hotel. If you decide to get breakfast there you should be early since it can happen that people stand in a long line in order to get breakfast.

DE • … oder im Hotel. Allerdings ist Honey Honey im gleichen Block wie das Hotel und dort gibt es wirklich leckeres Frühstück. Wenn man sich dazu entscheidet dort frühstücken zu gehen, sollte man auf jeden Fall früh dran sein, denn es kann passieren, dass eine Schlange bis auf die Straße steht.

10 AM – Start your amazing bike tour

EN • In my opinion exploring SF by bike is the best thing you can do. It might sound strange because San Francisco only consists of hills and valleys, but there are bike routes that show the most convienient way around. It is soon much fun to drive down a hill that it is totally worth the effort of biking it up. Plus you can see so many things, just stop when you see a café or shop you would like to check out. So we biked across the city from Union Square to Crissy Field on the Beach and across the Golden Gate bringe. It was an truly amazing feeling be on the bridge, feel the wind in your face and see the city on the one side and the wide ocean on the other.

DE • Ich denke, SF mit dem Fahrrad zu erkunden ist das Beste, was man machen kann! Es mag seltsam klingen, weil die Stadt nur aus Hügeln und Tälern besteht, aber es gibt Fahrradrouten, die einem den bequemsten Weg zeigen. Außerdem macht es sooo viel Spaß, die Hügel hinunterzufahren, dass es die Mühe wert ist, sie hoch zu strampeln. Man kann auf diese Art und Weise so viele neue Dinge entdecken und einfach anhalten wenn man ein nettes Café oder ein tolles Geschäft sieht. Wir sind mit dem Fahrrad quer durch die ganze Stadt vom Union Square zum Crissy Field am Strand und über die Golden Gate Bridge geradelt. Es war ein wahnsinnig tolles Gefühl, auf der Brücke zu sein, den Wind im Gesicht zu spüren und die Stadt auf der einen Seite und den weiten Ozean auf der anderen Seite zu sehen.

1 PM – Go for lunch at Mel’s diner

EN • My trip to San Francisco was not only about visiting the city, but also about having lots of American food. So I tried as much as I could. For lunch we went to Mel’s diner, I really loved the food there! Of course it does not have to be Mel’s diner but don’t miss out on some original diner to have delicious food.

DE • Mir ging es auf meiner Reise nach San Francisco ging es nicht nur darum, die Stadt zu sehen, sondern auch darum amerikanisch zu essen. Deshalb stand für mich ein Burger in Mel’s Diner auf dem Programm.  Natürlich muss es nicht Mel’s sein um dieses Amerikanische Erlebnis zu machen, aber man sollte auf jeden Fall mal in einem originalen Diner gewesen sein!

2 PM – Chill out at Chrissy Field

EN • Chrissy Field is a park located directly on the beach between the city and the Golden Gate Bridge. There was a lot to see this weekend, especially because of the Air Show. But even if there is no such spectacle, this place at the beach is amazing to chill out! Many Families go there to have a nice picnic or BBQ, enjoy the sun and the water. After a biking tour through the city, a nap or a cool beer at Crissy Field is the right thing to do!

DE • Crissy Field ist ein Park direkt am Strand zwischen der Stadt und der Golden Gate Bridge. Dieses Wochenende gab es dort viel zu sehen, vor allem wegen der Air Show. Aber auch wenn es kein solches Event stattfindet, ist dieser Park am Strand wunderbar zum entspannen! Viele Familien gehen dorthin, um zu picknicken, zu grillen, oder um Sonne und das Wasser zu genießen. Nach einer Fahrradtour durch die Stadt ist ein Nickerchen oder ein kühles Bier im Crissy Field genau das Richtige!

4 PM – Treat yourself at the Crepe House

EN •  I was just passing by with the bike when I saw the nice outside area of the Crepe House . It lovely to just sit and watch people passing by while enjoying a delicious strawberry crêpe. In the same street (Polk Street) are many thrift shops if you are in the mood to do some vintage shopping. Afterwards we went back to the hotel to grab our things and give the bikes back. And there was only one last thing on by bucket list to do before I could leave amazing SF.

DE • Ich wäre fast mit dem Fahrrad vorbei gefahren, als ich den schönen Außenbereich des Crepe House’ noch im Augenwinkel gesehen habe. Und ich konnte einfach nicht widerstehen! Es ist toll nachmittags in einem Café zu sitzen, den beschäftigten Menschen auf der Straße zuzusehen und einen Cappuccino und einen Erdbeercrêpe zu genießen. In der gleichen Straße (Polk Street) gibt es viele Secondhand-Läden, in denen man bummeln kann wenn man auf der Suche nach Vintage-Schätzen ist. Danach sind wir zurück ins Hotel, um unsere Sachen zu packen und die Fahrräder zurückzugeben. Nun gab nur noch eine letzte Sache zu tun, bevor ich SF verlassen konnte.

9 AM – Rush trough the night in a Cable Car

EN • Riding a Cable Car was the last thing I needed to do before leaving the city. We took the cable car in California Street and went downhill towards the financial district. Standing on the side board of this cable car, seeing the night sky with the skyscrapers of San Francisco and all the city lights down the hill was one of the best things I have ever done.

DE • Mit einem Cable Car zu fahren war das Letzte, was noch auf meiner Liste stand, bevor ich die Stadt guten Gewissens verlassen konnte. Mit dem Cable Car durch die Nacht zu fahren hat meine Erwartungen allerdings noch übertroffen! Wir sind in California Street zugestiegen und Richtung Finanzviertel bergab gefahren. Auf dem Seitenstieg zu stehen, den Nachthimmel mit den Wolkenkratzern von San Francisco auf der einen Seite und all die Lichter der Stadt durch die abfallenden Straßen zu sehen war eines der tollsten Erlebnisse die ich je hatte und ein perfektes Ende meiner Reise!
