5 things to do when traveling in the heart of Mexico

EN • When planning a weekend in the heart of Mexico, the cities Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende come as a package. Its possible to see both cities within one weekend. Last weekend, I had the pleasure to spend Mexico’s biggest holiday, the Independence Day visiting those two cities. It was wonderful to see all the national celebrations, customs and traditions. Actually this was my second time there – and I really enjoyed it! Personally I can not tell which place I like better, as they are very different. In this post I am going to tell you what I enjoyed the most when traveling to the heart of Mexico.

1. Have a breathtaking few in Guanajuato

EN • Downtown of Guanajuato is a busy and colorful place,  isolated from the rest of the world, surrounded by mountains. You reach the city though a tunnel. Even if you want move within the city from A to B you may have to go a long way through a tunnel system since the routes are very complex. The roads are so steep that one has the feeling to drive up a wall at a 90 degree angle. One may pray that the engine does not fail or the car gets stuck in one of the super-narrow streets. In the city center are soo many things to see. There are hundreds of vendors offering food or crafts on the market. You will fall in love with this town of art and tradition whose charm stems from its authenticity and friendly atmosphere. There is no place like Guanajuato with its steep streets, colorful houses, a truely breathtaking view from the Pípila, the viewing platform from which you can perfectly oversee the city.

 2. Get lost in the streets of San Miguel de Allende

EN • San Miguel Allende is what Mexicans call “Pueblo Mágico”, a magical village. Thats especially true when strolling around to get to feel the vibes of this beautiful colonial city. This city is so beautiful, that many Americans and Canadians choose to live here after retiring. One of the remarkable things in the city is, the beautiful cathedral in the city center (seen in my instagram). To me, San Miguel de Allende is a perfect place for shopping (see number 5). Also, I really loved spending time in the botanical garden which lies a bit outside the city. Its a Mexican paradise where you get to see huge cacti or unique trees. The first time I went to San Miguel, I stayed in an Airbnb since I really love to get to know people which then can show you their favorite spots in town.

3. Experience a Mexican cantina

EN • Let’s get the party started! Guanajuato has an exciting night life. You can choose from various clubs and bars to spend an unforgettable night! I was particularly impressed by “La Icendio”, Guanajuato’s oldest “Cantina”. When you enter this bar through the squeaking, swinging wooden doors, it feels like time would be turned back. What supports this feeling is the existence of a visible urinal, which is (allegedly) not used anymore. Being in Guanajuato, you should definitely visit this bar! However, if you want to party more upscale club, I can recommend the “Grill”. On the Independence weekend, there were champagne showers all night, so that the waiters even took out their umbrellas. In the end, I think the perfect mix of locations will grant you an unforgettable evening!

4. Eat mexican food..

EN • …. of course you hear that advice everywhere when you travel through Mexico. But heres the thing: There are soo many delicious Mexican restaurants. While eating, let the Mariachis play! Listening to their voices while enjoying a original Mexican dish is a unique experience.

5. Go shopping

EN •.. for example in one of various artisan shops in San Miguel de Allende. While strolling around, I noticed so many little shops offering unique clothing, handmade things and wonderful interior. Many talented designers live and sell their pieces in San Miguel or Guanajuato. I spotted this young Mexican with an unique embroidery on his Jacket in the streets of Guanajuato.

EN •.…. during my time in Mexico I learned to love the country very much. Hence it is very sad to see, that earthquakes are currently eroding the country. Therefore the population suffers a lot. I am grateful that nothing has happened to me or my friends. In recent days, I have experienced the people of Mexico with incredible strength. Here in Guadalajara, hundreds of charity projects have been launched to send food, medicine and aid to the crisis areas.
